PARAMUS, N.J. – Legislators, mayors, engineers, environmental experts and others will gather at Bergen County College in Paramus next week to address affordable housing in New Jersey.

We the activists and citizens of the surrounding communities must attend and show by our presence that we are not going to accept this invasion of our communities.

The hearing is the first of several being planned by Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi (R-Westwood).

Schepisi has introduced a pair of bills that would freeze municipal affordable housing obligations through the end of 2017, and set up a commission to study the issue.

But state lawmakers have yet to move forward on the legislation, so the assemblywoman decided to create her own hearings and provide the transcripts to the legislature.

“The tough job of finding a solution cannot wait another day,” Schepisi said in a press release. “If the state Legislature won’t hold meetings on court-forced overdevelopment, I will.”

Schepisi said the hearings will examine ways to provide a better way toward affordability for residents while protecting municipalities from a recent state Supreme Court ruling that could force the construction of up to 1.5 million unneeded housing units.

The hearing will take place on Thursday, June 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bergen Community College's Technology Education Center room 128.
