Yesterday's shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue was an absolute tragedy. But it was also tragic to see how quickly the media and Left tried to politicize it.
They tried to pin this on Donald Trump and blame the President for inspiring this horrible hate crime. But the truth is that the shooter hated Donald Trump. He absolutely despised the President and considered him to be a traitor.
So, the gun control movement had to find another target to blame. They chose me. They chose the right to keep and bear arms. Already, we are seeing your anti-gun colleagues starting to demand that Congress "do something."
In this case, their plan to "do something" means chipping away at my rights and making it easier to disarm innocent people.
Democrats and vulnerable Republicans are now demanding a vote on the "red flag" bill. This legislation would allow police and judges to disarm gun owners believed to pose a threat to themselves or others. It sounds nice, in theory, but the devil is always in the details. This proposal would allow disarmament based on nothing but hearsay.
Under the Constitution, the government must meet a high standard in order to violate or suspend someone's rights. Currently, there are only a handful of reasons the government can use to justify disarmament. They can (1) charge or convict someone with a crime or (2) have them adjudicated mentally defective (either through involuntary admission to a mental hospital or a court hearing). Someone can lose their right to bear arms if they are (3) dishonorably discharged from the military, (4) become a fugitive from justice, (5) renounce their citizenship, or (6) suddenly lose their immigration status and become an illegal alien. Gun grabbers want to add 'hearsay' to the list.
This is by design. If it is easy for the government to disarm someone, then the 2nd Amendment isn't a right anymore... it becomes a privilege.
Forget about the concept of "innocent until proven guilty." Under the red flag bill, it is up to the gun owner to prove their innocence, not the government to prove their guilt. Judges would then be allowed to extend the disarmament order for 6 to 12 months, without charges even being filed.
If this passes, Americans will be disarmed without even being charged with a crime. This program would be grossly abused. Law enforcement officers already have all the tools they need to disarm dangerous people. The only thing this bill does is make it easier to disarm innocent people as well.
A number of your colleagues want a vote on this bill before the midterms. They want to sacrifice my God-given right to self defense in order to hold onto their power. If you go through with this, you will be removed from office. Any Congressman or Senator who sacrifices my rights will be removed from office.
You swore an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That includes this effort to expand nationwide gun confiscations.
Stop this bill from moving forward or else the next time your name appears on the ballot will be your last...
